Eastern dairy cooperatives merge

Agropur Co-operative based in Longueuil, Que., and Farmers Co-operative Dairy Limited of Bedford, N.S., have agreed to join forces.

The merger was approved by member votes in mid-March. In a joint statement, Serge Riendeau, chairman of Agropur, said: “The merger will allow us to better serve our customers on a national basis, and support the overall objective of consolidating the cooperative milk processing sector for the benefit of the member dairy farmers.” Added Farmers’ chair, Jeannie van Dyk:

“[This] is a great opportunity for our members to continue to have a voice in the marketing of their milk through ownership in a large national cooperative organization.” The resulting operation has 4,304 members nation-wide with $3.2 billion in annual sales. ◊
