This past September, Coast Capital Savings Credit Union’s (555,000 members, $21 billion in assets) 17th annual charity golf tournament raised a record $300,000 for the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation in support of mental health research for youth. This brings to $2.8 million in total raised at the tournament, held in British Columbia at the Northview Golf & Country Club in Surrey.
In a media release, interim Coast Capital Savings CEO Bruce Schouten emphasized the dire need to fund mental health for youth. “When you look at the numbers — 10 to 20 percent of Canadian youth affected by mental illness and 3.2 million Canadian teenagers are at risk of depression — you realize that by supporting mental health research, the effect of our dollars multiplies,” Schouten remarked. ◊
