Personal debt levels rose in third quarter 2012

Canadians taking on more personal debt

TransUnion’s quarterly analysis of Canadian credit trends has found that the average personal debt (excluding mortgages) increased to $26,768 during the third quarter of 2012 — and the increase was consistent throughout Canada.

On a year-over-year basis, the largest increases were in New Brunswick (9.49 percent), Prince Edward Island (8.25 percent) and Newfoundland and Labrador (7.83 percent). British Columbians held the highest consumer debt in the country, with an average of $38,837, while Quebec residents had the lowest average at $19,174. ◊
