Alterna Bank, a subsidiary of Alterna Savings and Credit Union (140,000 members, $5.1 billion in assets) was a sponsor of the 13th annual Mekong Business Challenge, held this past March in Cambodia.
The challenge drew the brightest university teams from 11 universities across the Mekong Region: Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and China. It was the first time that Alterna sponsored the event, which is a platform for developing youth talent and launching businesses and social ventures that will advance communities in the region. Rob Paterson, CEO of Alterna, who has been an adviser for the challenge since its inception in 2006, stated in a media release, “I passionately believe in creating ethical leaders for the future, who focus on a social purpose while building on a business.”
The winner of the Mekong Business Challenge received an all-expense paid trip to compete in the International Business Model Competition (IBMC), in Utah this May. The IBMC is the largest lean startup competition in the world. ◊
