A new partnership between Servus Credit Union (380,000 members, $14.8 billion in assets) and the University of Alberta Faculty of Science — the first of its kind for an Alberta-based financial institution — was announced last November.
Servus, which is headquartered inEdmonton, reported that it will provide nearly $1.6 million in funding over five years to support research projects in data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing and related areas. The partnership will also embrace joint research projects, the creation of a new industrial research chair, opportunities for graduate student research applied to real-world financial challenges and professional development for Servus employees.
“Servus Credit Union is privileged to work with the University of Alberta to grow our understanding and use of artificial intelligence and data science here in Alberta,” Servus CEO Garth Warner stated. “As an Alberta-based company, we want to build a program that we can learn from and we want to nurture and retain talent that will benefit us and the province as a whole. Our ultimate goal is to improve the financial fitness of our members and Alberta.” ◊
