Putting the Bite on Hunger

Last year, First West Credit Union (250,000 members, $11 billion in assets) generated, via food collection and fundraising, the equivalent of 1.35 million meals for hungry British Columbians.

First West and its local divisions: Valley First, Enderby & District Financial, Envision Financial and Island Savings collected about 20,000 kilograms of food for food banks and raised more than $450,000 for hunger-related causes in 2016. “The response to our hunger awareness efforts has been overwhelming,” says First West CEO Launi Skinner.

First West, through an ongoing partnership with Food Banks B.C., supports all of the province’s 99 food banks. It has also launched The Full Cupboard, an initiative to fight hunger on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands through the Island Savings division. Another initiative, specific to the BC Interior called Feed the Valley, surpassed its $1 million fundraising goal. “Food security is a cause that is near and dear to our hearts and one that has been embraced by our employees and our members,” Skinner says. ◊
